It is vital to utilize a pet shampoo rather than a product for humans. Although there are mild shampoos for people, the difference in the acidity or “pH” will be drastically off. This will ultimately lead to flaking, itching, and drying a dog’s coat out.
Consult a veterinarian or groomer to identify the right time interval between baths for your dog. On average, once every few weeks is enough. Some breeds are able to go even longer periods in between washings though.
Always brush before and after a bath. The dead, shedding fur needs to be removed prior to a bath. Without brushing first, dirt and shampoo can be left in the coat even after the bathing process.
Keep water and shampoo out of ears and eyes. Water entering the ear canals may lead to infections. Shampoo in the eyes can be remedied by washing with warm water or a saline solution.
To prevent skin irritation, rinse as thoroughly as possible. The residue from shampoos will cause dogs to lick themselves and could lead to other skin problems.
